Health Testing

All dams and sires used when breeding have been carefully selected to produce healthy puppies for you and your family's enjoyment for years to come.  Along with maintaining excellent breed temperaments, DNA tests are also performed on dams and sires to ensure they do not carry any gene mutations known to cause Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), Von Willebrand disease (vWD), and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).  At Sunny Hill, we use VetGen for our DNA analysis, the leader in veterinary genetic disease research and genetic disease detection services.  The results of some of the tests do not exemplify a dog from ever being affected, but when properly paired and bred can greatly increase your chances of getting a healthy dog with longevity on its side.  Going beyond DNA tests, Hips and Elbows are also x-rayed and certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).  Once a breeding candidate has passed all of these test, the eyes are then examined by an optometrist and submitted to OFA for certification.  Blood tests are also done on breeding dams and sires 3 years and older to ensure normal thyroid function.

I want to provide the happiest, healthiest puppies possible to you and your family, and by taking all of these measures helps ensure my goal.  Any of the test results are available upon request to customers.
